Fall 2014 Incoming Class: Diverse and Promising

Michigan State University College of Law will welcome a diverse group of more than 300 students for the fall 2014 semester.

The incoming first year J.D. class is comprised of 255 students from 34 states and 6 countries. These students come from 124 undergraduate institutions and possess 45 different undergraduate majors. Additionally, 25 transfer students from a variety of law schools are expected.

Women make up 45% of the students and 23% identify as a U.S. minority. The class reflects MSU Law’s strong commitment to diversity and providing equal opportunities for high-caliber students.

An anticipated 31 international students from Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Turkey, China, Iran, Russia and Nigeria will join MSU Law this fall, according to Carrie R. Feeheley, director of graduate and internal programs. Many of these students already have a law degree from their county and will pursue master of law (LL.M.) designations.

Many new students participate in Immersion Week, August 18-22. Their preparation began much earlier in the summer with an extensive online orientation. Once on campus, the law students complete the Foundations of Law course, begin their Research, Writing and Analysis course, attend the State Bar of Michigan Professionalism in Action Program, and receive a technology orientation. Immersion Week also includes an optional service project, demonstrating MSU Law’s commitment to pro bono work and community outreach.

“Immersion Week gives students a strong introduction to the rigorous academic life they will face in the next three years at MSU Law,” said Charles Roboski, assistant dean for admissions and financial aid. “It’s an opportunity for them to meet the faculty, the administrators, and the staff who will be critical to their success.”
